Welcome 2019!!!

Image
Well, it's the start of a New Year! I know I've been very slack on posting for most of last year. Heck lets face it, for a long time now. I'm not one who makes New Years resolutions. I don't plan on starting now. I will make more attempts to post more often, maybe. I'm still debating with myself what I should focus on. I could post about political things that are always in the news. But let's face it, don't we get enough of that thrown in our faces at every turn?  All right I will admit I will still do that from time to time. When I really need to vent about some stupid selfish things that some political persons has done or said to set me off. But I will try to limit those posts. Maybe I'll post more boring things about my day to day life. Just so you can see how boring and uneventful my life really is. Things like a calf that was born on December 5th. I want to call her Tiny. She maybe weighed 45 pounds when she was born. B...

June 1st, sort of

Image
Right at this moment I'm really not in the mood to do to much sharing. So here is a picture I took while I was sitting by the fire pit one night. It's kind of on the windy side right now so I can't burn the pit right now. Here are some turkey's that came to strut their stuff one night. There was also three hens with them. I think there might be a possibility that one of the hens might have a nest some where near by. Speaking of baby birds. There are a number of Robins that have different nests around the yard. One under our deck. They might be gone now. it does not take long for them to lay eggs, hatch out and then the babies fly away. One in a tree at the front of the house. They are hatched out and gone already. Another one in the barn on top of a post that the husband wanted to more. They have finally flew the nest so he moved the spare post. I think there is one in the big garage that have hatched out and moved on. At least one more in the hay ...

August 1 and more other things to ponder

Image
I know it's been a while since I've posted anything but I'm sorry. The only excuse i have right now is it's summer and I'm not in the mood to ponder things to much right now. Not to say I haven't been thinking about things because I have. The first thing I will share with you is my first of the month picture of my swing. Ready, here it is. TA! DA! The swing!!!!!!!! The long grass behind it might be a little browner then last month but that's about it. I suppose you want to know what else I've been up to. Well I'm going to share a few pictures with you that I managed to take. This is what I see from time to time from by bedroom window.I manage to get this picture the other day. There is also three fawns the husband has seen in the field. I have not been able to get a picture of them yet. These are my three turkeys. It's always fun talking to them. I just kind of whistle at them and they talk back.  Remember the gnomes I w...

Two more projects done, Plus a tragedy

Image
As you can see it is a set. One is for that extra tp roll. The other a tissue cover.  This is what the top of the tp holder looks like. So now on to the next one. Only two more tissue holders to go before I move on to the next group of things. Now on to the tragedy. There was a double murder in my back yard.  My last two turkeys were murdered by a mink. I'm still not sure exactly how it got into the pen. The husband was able to give it swift justice. He was to late to save my girls though. I will miss Lady and Jezebel. I will miss hearing them clucking and giving them a good pet from time to time. We plan on redoing the pen and coop for next year and hopefully be able to get some more.  So till next time. Keep on pondering the pondering possibilities.

Hurrican Me and turkeys

Image
Well this last week for me was very boring and hum drum for the most part. Although with my name being Sandy I was getting blamed for all the destruction. I will say I did warn them I was coming. Maybe next time people will heed my warning when I tell them bigger trouble is coming their way. I don't mess around.   And by the way when you name a hurricane Sandy you better be ready for a whole lot of sand to come with it. It must be kind of weird plowing sand off the streets instead of snow. Sand is worse. Snow will eventually melt on it's own while sand will not. With all this mess in New York it was a very good thing they finally cancelled that marathon. A little later then they should have but at least they finally woke up about what should be the top thing to concentrate on. With this being November already, I hope they are thinking about the Thanksgiving. I wonder if they will still have the parade?  But I suppose one thing at a time. It looks like they will be dealin...

Animal Foot notes

Image
Well I thought I would introduce you to all of the critters that share my life. You've already met these three, Moe, Larry and Curly. This is my horse, Beauty coming to say hello. These are a few of my chickens. You know how hard it is to get them all to stand still long enough to get a good picture. I have a total of 7. Need any eggs? Kidding. I do get up five a day. . Our turkeys. I think there are two toms and two hens. I've named them Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel. Lucy is the white one. Boy, does she like to talk. This is my outside cat Fluff. He not a holding kind of cat but he is a good mouser. This is Minnie, my inside cat. The husband like to call her Tubby because she is a big kitty. This is Fawn. Or my shadow when I'm at home. I can't go any where without her following me. Last week Thursday we had two more additions. For now I'm calling this one Maynard. This one is Gilligan. He can be full of energy. Now I thought the husband ...

Sunday Morning thoughts

Another quiet Sunday morning waiting for the sun to come up. I wish I could sleep longer on the weekends but no matter what I'm up before the sun. Yesterday I had to dog sit for the youngest while she was spending the day with friends, so it was a kind of quiet day, considering I had two dogs running around the house. We found out that of our three turkey's one is a tom. We found this out when a wild tom showed up and started strutting around the pen. Our tom tried to fan out but the bigger tom out fanned him. The first day he strutted outside the pen our turkeys would mostly just lie down but after a day they just started to ignore the bigger tom. I was going to get a picture of the big guy but thought he would stick around longer, so no picture. But if he does show up again I will have my camera handy, just in case. Now that I know we have two hens and one tom I have to think of names for them. Maybe I'll call them Jack, Chrissy and Janet. But that's still up in th...

Pondering Kennedy and Kidnapping plus other things

Image
I've been pondering what exactly to ponder. There are so many things to ponder. There is the death of Senator Kennedy. He did allot to help so many other people who were having major problems in their lives. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Compared to other well known people who have passed on they certainly got him in the ground fast. It was the usual amount of time from death to burial. Unlike someone who died what two months ago and has still not been planted yet. It's just his shell, he's not there any more. There is the finding of the girl who was kidnapped 18 years ago. It is so hard to imagine what she went through I would not know what to say. For her and the two children she had because of this sick person, to live that long in this back yard is so hard for me to imagine. And for no one to make a fuss about the way the yard looked was something I can't understand. There is always some nosy neighbor who will always complain. I think I would have b...

Rude awakening

I was sleeping very nicely this morning when just after five something woke me up. The husband was outside using his turkey call. What he was doing up at that time, I didn't know. I'm usually the one up at that time while he is snoring away. I laid there till I couldn't take it any more, which was about 6 o'clock. He claimed he had not slept all night. Which means he'll crash this afternoon. He even put out the turkey decoy trying to get a tom turkey to come in. So he could get a picture. None have showed up yet. But he could hear one off in the distance. Where is he right now? He just took a ride around the block to see if he could find anymore. It's a kind of rainy day right now. This afternoon I have to help the theater group I belong to move their props to a new location. I'm hoping it won't be raining at that time. What my town needs is an arts and entertainment center. We do our performances at the high school. But we could use more room and a bi...

The Calves and the Return of the Turkeys

Image
As I promised here are pictures of our new calves. They look a little hairy right now because they still have their winter hair. This is Norman This is Norbert. Now with the snow gone the turkeys are coming around again. These are four hens checking out things underneath the bird feeder. I hope that some day after their babies hatch out that they will bring them around so that I can record their growth and post for all to see. I also hope that I can catch a tom turkey in ...

Just Friday

Image
I usually don't write on a Friday but I have the day off. It was a voluntary day. I could have worked if I wanted to work on the line but I just needed to have a three day weekend for once. If it is the same next Friday I will work no matter what. It is slow for this time of year. But it does happen from time to time. Other factories are also slow around here. It's hard everywhere. I'm just hoping things will start turning around for the whole country soon. But I know it will more long months then people have patients for. Anyway last Sunday before I went to the baby shower this is what we saw out the window. They would have been there longer but the oldest one decided at that moment to go out side and feed something to the dog. There were about a dozen of them. They still show up from time to time. I just wonder how much I'll see them this winter. Here a couple of pictures from the shower. This Baby Shower sign was the only thing telling you it was a Baby Shower. ...

The invasion of Turkey's

Around this time every day if I look outside there is a high chance I will see a flock of turkey's. One flock has about ten. Another one has about twelve and another one has three. My outside dog just lies there and watches them. But when Fawn see them she starts barking, whining and wanting outside. I try to get her to wait till they are out of sight before I let her out. I just keep telling her "If you don't look out the window they won't bother you." But she usually don't listen, like every other dog who gets upset when another animal has invaded their territory. Every year there seam to be more and more turkeys. They have the worst sense of birth control. The problem is there are not enough natural enemies in the wild to control them and you have to apply for a permit to shot them. I say give a few more years and maybe someone can convince the DNR or who ever decides these kind of things, that turkeys can be seen as small game like rabbit or partridge so y...

Summery Sunday

Image
What a week everywhere. Stock market was like being on a roller coaster. I wonder if it's going to level off any time soon? My guess would be, nope. After being off for a week from work it's always a little hard getting back into the swing of things. My feet take a while to get use to walking on that cement floor in steel toed shoes for over 8 hours a day, again. At least I didn't have to have work Saturday. My husband on the other hand had to work extra hours on Friday and Saturday. He also made some hay this week. He's a bit tired and plans on taking the day to relax. Friday was a very interesting day at work. First I heard about a scandal on second shift over pie that we were given the other day at work as a treat from the company. They do that sort of thing for us maybe once a month. When they offer pie and ice cream to us they call it "A pie and ice cream social". Any way the way I originally heard the story was that some woman took two pieces of pie. Im...

Turkey Update and The Bear

It's the day after the fourth and I hope all had a good time. For me it was just another day except I didn't have to work yesterday. My husband was baling hay all day. He will be baling hay today also and plans on resting tomorrow. Our shed is almost full of hay and he still has a couple of fields to go. This year he might even get a second a crop and if he does I'm not sure where he will put it. The pictures of the turkeys from the last post, when I showed them to my husband he said they were Jakes not hens. He said the flight feathers were gray and that is a sign of a tom. I haven't seen them in the yard again so far. Up by the family cabin my parents and a niece were up there. At one point my dad who was outside by the fire pit, told my mom and niece to look out the back window. Out by a spot where they scatter a little corn for the deer was a young bear cub. It was a baby from last year they think. It wasn't real small but it wasn't very big either. My niece...

Turkey Invasion

Image
This morning I was getting my tea ready when I looked out the window and this is what I saw. They walked around the yard. Even the front yard where our outside dog is. I wanted to get a picture of them walking right by his doghouse but I couldn't get a good shot. I was ready for him to come charging out of his house, but all he did was when they were out his reach was poke his nose out of his house and watch them walk away. I had to be very careful in the house at this time because Fawn was wondering what I was looking at. If she would have seen them there would have been a whole lot of barking, whining, yipping and" Shhhh be quiet!!" going on. Then my husband would have come out of the bedroom yelling trying to tell me to keep her quiet. But that didn't happen. Peace remained in the household. As far as I could tell these were both hens, no beards. I just wonder if they have any eggs somewhere close by. I would love to see a bunch of babies running around. If there i...

Saturday morning writings

Another Saturday morning. My oldest should be home soon. She works third shift at the local grocery store. She usually comes home and goes to bed not to long later. Most of the time she is still in bed at 5 or 6 in the pm. She just got home this minute. She filled me in on some of the people who show up at 2am usually drunk. Like this one guy bought some imitation crab meat and started opening it up before he bought it. After he paid for it he offered her some. She politely said no. He and his friend stumbled out of the store. She was really more concerned this weekend with maybe getting hit on by drunk cowboys. There is a rodeo just outside of town this week. But so far no drunk cowboys, just drunk locals. On Memorial Day I was sitting out on my back deck in the morning reading a book with my dog Fawn standing on my lap looking over my shoulder. Suddenly she starts growling and whining. I thought it was this wild cat that lives in our shed, but it wasn't, it was a hen turkey. It...

Time to plant the garden

It's another Saturday morning. I think this is becoming a habit. The weekend is really the only time I feel like writing. Right now the husband is out trying to hunt another turkey. He has not had any luck this time. It's kind of late in the season and I think most of the hens are already sitting on eggs or about to. The one other bad thing about hunting this late in the season is wood ticks. The one thing I hate about this time of year. All I have to do is think about them or hear someone say they had one on them and I start feeling like I have one crawling on me. And he did have one on him last night. Today it looks like it's going to be a beautiful day. A great day to plant my garden. This year we will be planting a bigger garden. Like potatoes, corn, green and yellow beans, radishes, lettuce, carrots and peas. I also plan on growing some gourds, pumpkins and sunflowers. One year I had a a row of sunflowers planted and something stole all but maybe 6 of the seeds before ...

Another quiet Saturday Morning

Image
Another Saturday morning and all through the house everyone is snoring but me. The sun is starting to come up, it's cloudy and there is rain coming down. At least it's not snowing. I do wish the temps would warm back up. It's only been in the 50's. I want to have the high 60's and mid 70's back. I wonder if the frog eggs survived the cold we have been having since the frogs had their fun the day it was so warm here. I'll have to go check on them later. My husband is happy he got a turkey on Thursday. It was 26 pound and it had one inch spurs. The beard was 8 inches long. I guess we'll be having turkey one of theses days. There are more turkeys that keep showing up in the field next to us but he can not get any more right now so he just has fun trying to call one closer with one of his turkey calls. It's kind of interesting watching a tom turkey come running across the field trying to find a female to strut for. I have a neighbor to the south who had ...

Natures Show

It's Earth Day! And I'm enjoying the show that nature has been putting on around here. Yesterday I was outside doing some things and the frogs were being very noisy. I decided to go and check out this one wet spot that the loudest ones were talking. Usually when you get with in a few feet of a spot like this they all become silent, but not this bunch. They were having an orgy. There was one group of about four all piled on each other. They were flipping around as if they were trying to drowned one of them. I watched as another one seeked out one that was hidden under some dead grass. It sat there for awhile talking to it and it answered back every once and while. The one under the dead grass eventually came out and was pursued by that one and another one that was a ways farther away that decided to join in the pursuit. I stood there a while watching nature unfold. Today I went to the same spot and the frogs were not there like they were yesterday and if they were they kept thei...
