Remembering the past

I was going to write another random sentence yesterday but I got busy and then tired so maybe I'll do something later this week.

As I'm sitting here trying to figure out what to write I start thinking about how things have changed around here over the years. This Friday Wal-Mart will be opening. For the past couple years we have only had one grocery store and believe me they have taken full advantage of people having very high prices. It's the main reason I've been going to Marshfield to shop every two weeks.
I've seen allot of changes happen in this town. Like when I was little we had no stop and go lights. Now we have six.
My parents house is on a hill over looking town and the river. Growing up the road below the hill that runs along the river, was dirt. Along the river it was all grown up . Now the road is paved and they planted trees and mow the grass. All of the trees have signs that say they are donated in the memory of someone. There is a gazebo that is right below my parents house. There are two covered walking bridges. One on this end that goes over a spring that flowes into the river, it is the smaller of the two. The other one is longer and goes over the river on the other side of town. There is a walking bridge that goes over the river that leads through the woods to the library. The woods on the other side of the river is not thinned out because it's kind of swampy. It looks allot better then it use too.
Highway 13 that goes north and south through town looks nothing like it use to when I was growing up. There are not too many of the same building there anymore. It's almost to hard to say what used to be there. But now there is a K-Mart ( will it survive Wal-Mart opening up), a gas station where a bar use to be. Family video and Family Dollar where the A&W used to be. County Market where there used to be a field. McDonald's and Hardee's where houses use to be. A credit union where houses used to be. Medford Cafe where I think houses use to be. Most of these businesses have come to town in the last twenty five years. Wal-Mart is on the north side of town.
What I grew up with as main street, where most of the business where is nothing like it use to be. There use to be a shoe store, a few clothing stores, a couple of bakeries, a feed mill, a Sears catalog store and a dime store. All of these are gone. They are replaced by things like a used bookstore, parent resources, art gallery, karate schools, coffee shops, a gun store and a thrift store that I can think of. The bars are still there, a barber shop, drug store, furniture store and a couple of beauty shops. The dime store is becoming more and more part of the thrift store. They are owned by the same family.
One thing that never seams to last very long is a place where kids can go and hang out. It always seams to attract the trouble makers. There is a place where kids can go that is run by a local church. But I think kids that are not old enough to drink should have a place they can go but this area is known for it's attraction to drinking.
Sometimes I wish there was an arts and entertainment center where there could be allot of different other things kids and adults could get involved with that does not involve drinking. And not all kids are into sports.
We maybe a changing community but somethings never change.
There are more things that have changed like they built the elementary school close to the high school, the Simek Center( for hockey and other events), a new middle school, a number of factory changes, the rail trail(used to be where the train tracks ran north) for walking, biking and used for a snowmobile trail in the winter. It runs north to Prentice, about 26 miles I think.

Now for todays thought:
"Give your heart, but hold on to your spirit."
